Terms of Service
1. Acceptance of Terms
By accessing or using PlainLaw at plainlaw.org (the "Service"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use the Service. These Terms apply to all users, including free-tier users, pay-per-review users, and subscribers.
We reserve the right to update these Terms at any time. Continued use of the Service after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
2. Not Legal Advice — No Attorney-Client Relationship
This is one of the most important sections of these Terms. Please read it carefully.
PlainLaw uses artificial intelligence to analyze legal documents and provide clear, easy-to-understand summaries, risk assessments, and explanations. This output is provided for general informational purposes only.
PlainLaw's output does NOT constitute:
- Legal advice
- Legal opinions
- The practice of law
- A substitute for consultation with a licensed attorney
- A guarantee of any legal outcome
Use of PlainLaw does not create, and is not intended to create, any attorney-client relationship between you and PlainLaw or its owner. PlainLaw is not a law firm and is not regulated as one.
AI-generated analysis may contain errors, omissions, or inaccuracies. Legal documents are complex and context-dependent. PlainLaw's analysis is not a substitute for independent legal judgment. You are solely responsible for any decisions you make based on information provided by PlainLaw.
If you need legal advice, please consult a licensed attorney in your jurisdiction.
3. Service Plans and Payment
a. Available Plans
PlainLaw offers the following service plans:
- Free Tier: One (1) document review per registered account, at no charge.
- Pay Per Review: A one-time payment of $10.00 per document review.
- RedLine Pro: A recurring subscription of $29.00 per month, providing 10 document reviews per month during the active subscription period.
PlainLaw reserves the right to modify plan pricing and features at any time with reasonable notice to users.
b. Free Tier Limits and Enforcement
The Free Tier entitles each registered account to one (1) document review. This limit is enforced per account and is intended to provide a genuine trial of the Service.
The following actions are prohibited and constitute a violation of these Terms:
- Creating multiple accounts to obtain additional free reviews
- Clearing browser cookies, cache, local storage, or session data to reset or bypass review limits
- Using browser extensions, VPNs, proxy services, or any other technical means to circumvent usage tracking
- Using temporary, disposable, or alias email addresses to register additional accounts for the purpose of obtaining free reviews
- Sharing account credentials with other individuals for the purpose of bypassing payment requirements
- Any other method intended to obtain paid features without payment
PlainLaw uses account-based tracking, server-side enforcement, and may use cookies and device identifiers to enforce usage limits. Attempts to circumvent these measures are a material breach of these Terms and may result in immediate account termination without refund.
c. Billing and Subscriptions
- Payment is processed by Stripe. By providing payment information, you authorize PlainLaw to charge your payment method for the applicable plan.
- RedLine Pro subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period unless cancelled.
- You may cancel your RedLine Pro subscription at any time through your account settings. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period; no partial refunds are issued for unused days.
- All sales are final. PlainLaw does not offer refunds for completed document reviews.
- If a payment fails, access to paid features may be suspended until payment is resolved.
4. Acceptable Use
You agree to use PlainLaw only for lawful purposes and in accordance with these Terms. You agree NOT to:
- Upload documents you do not have the legal right to share or process
- Use the Service for any illegal purpose or in violation of any applicable law

We do not claim ownership of your documents and do not use them to train AI models.
The analysis results, risk scores, and summaries generated by PlainLaw are provided to you for your personal, non-commercial use. You may not resell or redistribute PlainLaw-generated analysis without written permission.
6. Disclaimer of Warranties
THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, PLAINLAW DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

AI-generated legal analysis may contain errors. PlainLaw makes no representation that its analysis is accurate, complete, current, or applicable to your specific legal situation. You use the Service at your own risk.
7. Limitation of Liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, PLAINLAW AND ITS OWNER SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR:
- Any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages
- Loss of profits, revenue, data, or business opportunities
- Damages arising from reliance on AI-generated analysis, summaries, or risk scores
- Damages arising from legal decisions made based on PlainLaw output
- Any damages exceeding the amount you paid to PlainLaw in the three (3) months preceding the claim
This limitation applies regardless of the theory of liability (contract, tort, negligence, strict liability, or otherwise) and even if PlainLaw has been advised of the possibility of such damages.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties or limitations of liability. In such jurisdictions, the above limitations apply to the fullest extent permitted by law.
8. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless PlainLaw and its owner, Jon Paul Marshall, from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, costs, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of or related to:

- Creation of multiple accounts to circumvent the Free Tier limit
- Any conduct that PlainLaw determines, in its sole discretion, to be harmful to the Service, its users, or its business
Upon termination, your right to use the Service ceases immediately. Provisions of these Terms that by their nature should survive termination (including intellectual property, disclaimers, limitations of liability, and indemnification) shall survive.

12. Governing Law and Dispute Resolution
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Missouri, without regard to conflict of law principles. Any disputes arising from or relating to these Terms or the Service shall be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Jackson County, Missouri, and you consent to the personal jurisdiction of such courts.
Before initiating any formal legal proceedings, you agree to contact PlainLaw at legal@plainlaw.org and attempt to resolve the dispute informally for a period of thirty (30) days.
13. Changes to These Terms
PlainLaw may update these Terms at any time. We will notify users of material changes by email or by posting a prominent notice on the website. The "Last Updated" date at the top of this page will reflect the most recent revision. Continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
